The Maine Coast Learning Expedition is modeled on the principles of Outward Bound Expeditionary Learning:

The Primacy of Self Discovery
MCLE Students create their own Independent Development Program

The Having of Wonderful Ideas
MCLE Students decide on their own research projects

The Responsibility for Learning
MCLE Students are expected to make a commitment to their projects seeing them through to their conclusions.

Intimacy and Caring, Service and Compassion
MCLE Students help each other and are available to help students in lower grades with their stewardship projects.

Success and Failure
Although all students are assured a fair measure of success, it is important to learn how to overcome adversity. Students will be supported in all aspects of their research.

Diversity and Inclusivity
At MCLE, team and group dynamics work helps us to appreciate each other for our strengths and differences.

The Natural World
The natural environments on MDI are the primary focus of MCLE outdoor studies.

Solitude and Reflection
At MCLE, Contemplation is encouraged, and a flexible schedule allows time to think things through.
