This year, the following projects were done by students at local schools. For a complete list of outreach projects see our history page.

Conners Elementary

  • Storm Drain Stenciling: Spring Storm Drain Stenciling is the joint effort of 3rd graders and high school students to educate the community about storm drain water runoff.  Unlike many towns in the U.S., MDI storm water drains directly to our bays without any treatment or filtering system.  These students stencil drains on public roads and provide witnesses and pedestrians with informational materials related to reducing pollutants in our storm water.

Emerson Elementary

  • Phytoplankton Monitoring: 6th graders at Conners tow for phytoplankton once a month throughout the entire school year.  Students learn to identify phytoplankton varieties in the Gulf of Maine and consider the impacts of phytoplankton blooms in an effort to inform the DMR about possible red tide events.

  • Phytoplankton Public Outreach: 6th and 7th grade.

  • Vegetative Buffer Project: 8th grade
