2007 Forum Healthy Watersheds, Healthy People: Understanding the Sea

To prepare for this year’s event, participating students are asked to create their admission tickets to the Youth Watershed Forum by writing or drawing their questions or concerns about the ocean on a piece of paper. On the reverse side students should indicate their first, second and third choice for the activity sessions. Please mail students tickets with the registration form so we can put them in the activity of their choice.

Each group of students who attend the Youth Watershed Forum are required to bring a display to exhibit the watershed work their class has been involved in. Students are asked to include their data, a graph and an explanation of their results.

This year we are trying something new! We are asking each class to prepare a 2-3 min presentation
explaining their project. These presentations will be given while visiting the displays, for this reason it is
important to keep presentations short and concise. Each class should choose a representative to present their information.

  1. What is the problem or issue in the your watershed?
  2. What did you and your classmates do to address this
    problem or issue?
  3. What did you find?
  4. What do you think should happen next?

Time for presentations is limited, so please have students prepare accordingly. Students will NOT have access to media resources (NO power point!!!). Therefore students should design their displays to include all the information they will need to give their short presentations. If you have questions or concerns please contact us.

We welcome poetry and artwork from students in all schools! We will display it at the forum!

Service Learning is an educational reform initiative that encourages student ownership in work that has a meaningful impact on the community while also meeting learning objectives. At the MDI Water Quality Coalition we believe it is important to foster student ownership of the Youth Watershed Forum. We want the students to feel that the Forum is THEIR forum. This is why the Youth Watershed Forum Student Planning Committee was formed.

Planning of the 2007 Youth Watershed Forum involved the Student Planning Committee. These students met frequently in the past months to create the Forum’s theme, plan morning activities and give a student voice to the Youth Forum preparations. Their hope is to have a two part forum over the next two years. This year we will learn about what is in our oceans and next year we will learn how to protect our oceans. The Student Planning Committee is very excited to share with their peers all the hard work they have done.
